dc.description.abstract | Recently the use of sweeteners as sugar substitutes in the diet, for the prevention of dental caries has been implemented; such as Stevia, a native plant from South America. This plant possesses multiple medicinal properties and several studies have reported an anticariogenic effect. Objective: To evaluate total absorbance, biofilm formation, planktonic growth, viability, metabolic activity and pH of Streptococcus mutans (strain UA159) when different dilutions of Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni are applied and to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC). Materials and methods: The effect of different dilutions of Stevia (0-400 mg/ml) on Streptococcus mutans total growth, biofilm formation, planktonic growth, viability, metabolic activity and pH during 72 hours was evaluated in this in vitro study. Results: Streptococcus mutans total growth and biofilm formation decreased with stevia, the MIC was 25 mg/ml and the MBIC was 6.25 mg/ml. No complete eradication of Streptococcus mutans was perceived with any of the Stevia concentrations. Planktonic growth of Streptococcus mutans was not repressed by high concentrations of Stevia and most of the Stevia concentrations generated an increment in the pH. Conclusion: Stevia can be considered a non-cariogenic sweetener. | es_ES |
